New Year, New You - Why it does/doesn’t work & What you can do about it!
First of all, let’s start with Congratulations! You’ve already survived “Blue Monday” - supposedly the most depressing day of the entire year! Secondly, if you do have resolutions and you get past Jan 28th then you’re already winning past the statistical odds!
Whether you believe in New Years Resolutions or not, love or hate the mantra of New Year, New You - this is a wonderful time to take a pause, reflect and in some form or another plan and strategize what a great 2019 it will be for you. Although I believe that reflection and planning should be a daily thing, what better way to welcome a new calendar by setting some powerful intentions (definition: something you want to do and achieve)!
It’s about crafting a healthy perspective, a mindset that serves you and a personal action plan that will help you create the life and career that you want.
I’ve been reading a lot lately about conflicting advice on resolutions, goal setting and planning in general. So let’s clarify what that’s all about and what you can do about it so it works for you. Let’s start with questioning some of your beliefs:
Do you believe in New Year’s Resolutions (according to wiki is “a person resolves to change an undesired trait or behaviour, to accomplish a personal goal or otherwise improve their life.”) If yes, that’s awesome. Has it worked for you in the past? If the answer is no, then you’re sitting in the 90% percentile of people who can’t stick to their “resolutions”. No worries, it’s nothing but a stat but one to pay attention to.
Next question, do you believe in goals? Yes, great. If so, then do you set SMARTER goals (Specific, Measurable, Action Oriented, Timely, Exciting & Rewarding)? Has it worked for you well? Are you achieving the results that you want? Maybe you’re the type to set monthly, quarterly and yearly milestones. If those work and you actually keep yourself to task and accountable to them, then keep at it!
Do you believe that putting attention to your priorities enables you to hit them more effectively? Or are you the type that just goes with the ebbs and flows of life? Either way, what this really comes down to is finding a way, your very own system and processes that will enable you to do and achieve everything that you want to.
There is no one size fits all. We are all unique beings with our own challenges, wants, needs and desires in life. And that is very much ok and very much the wonderful spice of life. It’s not about cramming yourself in a round hole or a square peg. It’s about crafting a healthy perspective, a mindset that serves you and a personal action plan that will help you create the life and career that you want. There are just various frameworks out there that provide you a way to organize your thoughts, goals and priorities. What it really comes down to, is figuring out what you truly want. Who do you want to be? How you want to show up in the world? It’s about being mindful and aware that there are elements to you that you want to improve and progress in. What’s important is choosing what to really honour and what’s truly important and meaningful for you. What it means to live a fulfilling life according to your own terms. How you define happiness and success. And ultimately, how you want to track your progress. As a coach, what I focus on with my clients is the progress they make in each of their important aspects and pillars of life - career, relationships, health, personal development - the physical, mental, spiritual parts that need Harmonious Success. The daily wins in life are knowing that you’re working on being better today than you were yesterday. What’s important is your figure out the best system and approach for you - one that will keep you inspired, motivated and focused. Only you get to define what that means for you. The awesome thing about life is that every day is an opportunity for growth and progress.
Choose 1 thing that you really want to achieve this year, break it down. You can try one of my suggested and simple framework 5Ws:
What do you want to achieve?
Why do you want it? I mean, truly, why is it important to you?
When will you achieve it?
Who will help you?
How are you going to make it happen?
Ta da. You’ve just started to create your 2019 Personal Action Plan. So bring on the year with a gusto and let me know if there’s any way I can assist in your quest!
